Chiropractic Practice Management — Chiropractors are an unique breed. Unlike medical doctors, they have no unified set business model or system to plug into upon graduation. This is frightening for many and can lead to absolute failure for most.

Fortunately, however, Affordable Management & Consulting was founded on business principles and a system that’s been successfully used for well over 50 years. AMC has literally saved thousands upon thousands of chiropractors from failing in practice and leaving the profession.

One recent example was articulated to AMC and future chiropractors through the following letter:

Dear future Doctor,

I wanted to get this letter to you before you joined us in the real world. I thought you should know being a Chiropractor isn’t easy and I wanted to share a little bit of my story.

In 2010 I had reached the end of my rope. I was in a mountain of debt and had completely lost my love for Chiropractic. In the previous 3 years I had sat in a bankruptcy lawyer’s office with the intention of giving up. All three times I backed out and prayed for another solution. For three long years I prayed.

The funny thing is for 3 years I had been receiving info from AMC practice management and kept tossing it in the trash. You see I had already been in 5 other practice management groups and seriously doubted they had anything else to offer.

Then I just couldn’t do it anymore. I hated what I was doing and how it was affecting my family and my whole life. I decided to go to an AMC seminar and then I had every intention of filing bankruptcy the very next week. THANK GOD I went to that meeting. I was incredibly impressed and decided I would try their procedures and give it three months. If it didn’t work I would file bankruptcy at that time.

Well, that didn’t happen. I now have a busy, growing practice. AMC is truly the best. They have strong Christian values and they have completely changed my whole outlook on life and Chiropractic. I LOVE being a Chiropractor again.

I have heard that 80% of Chiropractors are struggling to pay their bills. I don’t how accurate that is but I have watched many Chiropractors suffer and just get out all together.

I don’t want you to go thru what I endured. AMC has an amazing program just for you. At least come and sit in one meeting and see what they can do for you. Then let your heart and instincts help you make your decision. I wish I had gotten this letter when I was in school. It would have made life so much easier on me.

If you have any questions you can call AMC at 877-262-7117 or please feel free to contact me directly at 785-742-1800(work) or 785-742-6999(Home).

I’m rooting for you.

Your Brother in Chiropractic,

Dr. Sean Binkley

Thank you, Dr. Binkley, for sharing your story! We trust many will find hope and encouragement in its message.

But more importantly we hope struggling chiropractors will stop the insanity by picking up the phone and calling us.

If you’re tired of the struggle, call us today at (877) 262-7117.

We’re HERE to HELP chiropractors!

Chiropractic Practice Management — Although chiropractors are generally hardworking, dedicated professionals who strive to correct subluxations in order to benefit the overall wellbeing of their patients and community, they still might be clueless on how to run an efficient and profitable practice. Technique expertise and talent are not enough.

Matter of fact, the myth upon graduating simply isn’t true. We’ve all heard it before. Get your degree, drive down the road until you run out of gas, throw up a shingle, and watch the new patients flood in. Any chiropractor practicing in today’s economy will tell you it’s simply not true!

So where does one start?

Many successful entrepreneurs will tell you their success stemmed from some form of coaching or consulting.

What? You’ve never seen yourself as an entrepreneur?

Well face reality because you are! It’s up to you to go out and build a business around your definition of chiropractic. Unlike medical doctors, you don’t have the luxury of joining the local hospital in order to draw a paycheck. Your time, energy, and entrepreneurial spirit are what pays the bills.

Some doctors believe success lies in establishing good rapport and having a positive reputation within their community. Even though those things are essential, they aren’t the foundation of a successful business model that’s part of an efficient system toward future growth. These type of chiropractors would avoid many mistakes, pitfalls, and loss of money simply by following the guidance of a well-seasoned coach.

For the graduating chiropractor, even more variables come into play. You need to thoroughly understand your market and the potential patients you’ll serve. One way this is done is by performing a thorough demographic analysis. This helps you identify your target market as as well as how many chiropractors are currently practicing in your chosen market. The physical location of your chiropractic office is also very important. But the aforementioned is just the start. Consider this… what should you consider before signing a lease? What about leasehold improvements? Do you know how to negotiate with a landlord for optimal financial benefits? That’s just scratching the surface. We haven’t even talked about how to determine what type of marketing works within the community you’ve chosen!

Although it is hard to make any accurate comparison between chiropractic and top athletes, sports coaching might serve as a good example. Even when reaching a high level of expertise, skill and recognition, the top athletes still require a coach to supervise their training. This is because no matter how hardworking and dedicated they may be, they still might forget or miss certain details that will impair their performance in the long run. Being able to control and keep track of all nutritional requirements, vitamin supplements, motivation to train harder or any small injuries is frequently beyond the abilities of even the most disciplined athlete. Additionally, it is difficult to push themselves hard enough in their training to reach peak performance. Although a few adjustments to this comparison are required, it does not have to be different with a skilled and dedicated chiropractor.

Additionally, once your practice is up and running, maybe you’d like to spread those entrepreneurial wings even further. What better way to do so than by utilizing a coach that understands the dynamics of running either an associate practice or multiple practices spread out through various different communities.

By utilizing an experienced coach, you can avoid many headaches! A highly trained coach who possesses the necessary expertise with financial details, advertising and promoting, and business management will benefit you greatly in the long run, leaving you focused solely on your practice and on refining your skills.

Chiropractic Practice Management — One of the areas in business management that is consistently overlooked is staff development. Most chiropractors dislike the management side of running a chiropractic business because their hearts are dedicated to serving their patients.

The reason why so many doctors continue to improve their clinical skills and techniques long after graduation is that they are designed by nature to be passionate healers. However, they are not necessarily inwardly driven to improve their business skills or knowledge in practice management and as a result, the business side of their practice usually has room for improvement.

Staff development should be a priority for every practicing chiropractor. There will never be a practice that will outgrow the development of the people who work within it. Many chiropractors are ignoring the most valuable commodity they have, their staff.

Development of yourself and others is one of the most rewarding privileges that business ownership provides. Staff should feel they are developing daily or they will become disengaged and bored or, even worse, treat their positions like a job rather than a career.

Does this sound like your practice environment?

Here are five warning signs of staff under development:

1. High staff turnover
2. Your greatest source of internal referrals is not your staff
3. Your patients would score higher than your staff on chiropractic knowledge
4. Your services / collection ratios average less than 90% per month
5. You would rather have a root canal than an office staff meeting

Simply put, you are not leading anyone if you are not developing someone. If you are only known as the “check signer” that makes you the boss, not the leader. Once a doctor has taken an active role in leadership and mentoring his staff, the production or revenue in that office increases. In fact, you will never reach stress-free production levels without good staff and that only comes from staff development.

People are starving for leadership. Nobody wants a dead end job. However, in environments where there is a lack of leadership this is exactly the result. If you make an effort to become a leader within your practice and require accountability from your staff, you will be surprised with the results. Regularly we hear once a doctor has taken an active role in leadership and mentoring his staff, the production in that office has a substantial increase.

We realize there are many chiropractic doctors struggling to pay their bills and keep their practice afloat. With those valid concerns on their mind, leadership skills may be the last thing they care about right now. Nevertheless, taking an interest in developing staff and their leadership skills, may be the very thing that provides the growth that practice so desperately needs.

Doctors, you owe it to your staff and your practice to take charge. In fact, your practice will never reach its full potential without staff development.

Find someone who can mentor you and provide some leadership skills in practice management. Once you gain some confidence, you will find there is a motivating, self-confident and worthwhile leader laying dormant within you who is ready and able to share this skill with other members on your team.

Give me a great doctor and a poorly developed staff and you will get mediocre results. Give me a mediocre doctor with a highly developed staff and the practice will flourish!

You may be surprised to know that it’s not you that determines the outcome of your production, it’s your staff. An investment in your staff is an investment in your practice. Help them develop personally and professionally. With your help they can thrive, and when they thrive, so does your practice!

Chiropractic Practice Management — If you had one wish, what would it be? It’s fun to imagine the possibilities. Most of us would choose something that we think would bring us happiness, which leads me to the next question. What makes you happy? Is it the thought of more money? A big house? Looking ten years younger? It may shock you to find out that these things really don’t bring us the pleasure that we think they will.

The field of positive psychology, a discipline that investigates what leads to happiness, has made a surprising discovering. Studies have shown that contentment and meaning in life are not achieved by winning the lottery or being young and beautiful. Instead, one source of happiness comes from the pursuit and attainment of goals.
Goals give new meaning to everything you do. Something that may be thought of routine or mundane takes on new purpose when it is leading you one step closer to attaining a goal.

Goals give your life focus and clear direction. Those who don’t regularly set goals find themselves drifting through life, reacting to whatever comes their way. They base their decisions and actions on what their circumstances are at the present, not on what they hope to accomplish in the future. One day they find that days have turned into years and they’re so far off course that they can’t even remember the dreams they once had for their lives.

To make a lasting change, or to achieve anything meaningful in your life requires knowing where you need to go and how you are going to get there. That is a goal. Everyday we choose whether the actions of that day are going to bring us closer to who we want to be and where we want to go, or further away.

Japanese carp grow according the the size of their environment. If they are kept in a small body of water they reach full growth at two to four inches long. However, if they are placed in a larger tank, they can increase to many times that size.

Your goals determine your actions and habits. Your actions and habits determine your environment. The Japanese carp has not control over what kind of environment it is placed in therefore, it has not control over how large it will grow. However, we are free to overcome our limitations and live out our dreams if we have the wisdom to set goals and the discipline to follow through.

Many people lack the understanding of what goals actually are and that lack of understanding has prevented them from setting them. Some of you may have made a goal list in the past, but because you did not achieve what you aimed for, you didn’t repeat the process for fear of failing again. I understand completely. The worst kind of failure is failure to keep one’s word or commitment to one’s self.

A well structured goal list can only be made with a lot of forethought, otherwise it will only be a wish list. Those goals will remain a wish list unless you set a deadline and have an action plan for the completion of those goals.

A goal without a deadline is a wish because there is no call to action to make the goal a reality.

Here are 10 tips for goal setting.

Take time to quietly think about what you want to accomplish in your lifetime.

Determine what your values and priorities are in your life.

Be detailed; For example, if you want a new car choose a make, a model, a color, etc.

Don’t limit your goals to material goals only. Think about what you desire physically, mentally, and spiritually. This would include goals that involve your family, character, relationships, etc.

Set a deadline for all of your goals. Some may be 30-day goals. Others may have a deadline of one year, five years, ten years, and so on.

Read your goals aloud everyday. Keep a copy of your goals at your office and at your home.

Don’t share your goals with anyone who is not 100% supportive

Align your goals with your core values and beliefs. If your goal takes you away from something you believe strongly about, you will experience inner conflict and confusing as you go about pursuing your goal. Make sure your goals reflect who you are as a person.

Growth requires change. As you grow, your goals will grow and change too. If your goals don’t change then you are probably not following through on them.

There are going to be hard days. If achieving goals were easy, everyone one do it.

Remember, if you shoot for the moon and land on a star—you are still on higher ground! For example, if you want your practice to double from $20,000 in collections per month to $40,000 in collections per month and you are only collecting $36,000 per month at the end of your deadline, don’t count this as a failure. Be assured you have accomplished growth as a direct result of your efforts and your goals.

Challenge yourself to set goals and commit yourself to following through. A well thought out list of goals, an action plan, and a made up mind are crucial components in achieving the happiness and success that your are seeking for your life and practice.

Chiropractic Practice Management — One only has to pick up a newspaper or turn on the TV to know the economic state of this country is in tough peril. Many of you reading this may not even have to do that. One look at your recent bottom line may tell you more than you wanted to know about current economics.

I understand that many chiropractic practices will suffer devastating losses from which they may never recover during this difficult time, however, I am also optimistic that there will be some in the chiropractic profession who will prosper more than ever and the impact upon the profession will be a positive one. History shows that chiropractic does very well during tough times. Why? Because chiropractic is the best value for the patient’s dollar. During a recession people don’t necessarily stop spending their money, they just become more discerning about where and how they spend their money. They are looking for the most value.

If we want to survive during these tough economic times and if we want chiropractic to survive, we must do two things. First, we need to unite with other chiropractors across all techniques. And secondly we need to align our philosophy and practice back to the basics of chiropractic.

Unite

Harry S.Truman said, “It’s a recession when your neighbor loses his job; it’s a depression when you lose yours.” We need to start caring about others in our profession. Chiropractic is a very divisive profession. A new graduate once told me that he was shocked at the lack of support and encouragement he received from others in the profession when he first opened his practice. He lamented that chiropractors, “eat their young.” A sad statement, yet many can relate to its truthfulness.

This has to stop. Studies have shown that 80% of chiropractors either struggle to pay their bills or don’t pay them at all, yet we continue demoralize and beat down those whose techniques or opinions differ from our own. It’s time for the chiropractors that are doing well to put differences aside and do what is necessary to help fellow chiropractors in need.

Back to the Basics

A google search for the words “recession back to the basics” yielded 796,000 results. That’s enough to know that beating the recession is certainly a hot button regardless of your profession. Throughout history economic downturns have been notorious for taking people back to their roots. Winston Churchill said “We have no money. We shall have to think.”

Exactly.

This can be a positive time of refinement in chiropractic if we start thinking and remembering why we got into the profession in the first place. Remember the passion you had for the art and philosophy of chiropractic? Remember how it felt the first time you adjusted someone and relieved their pain? It’s about helping the body heal itself, just as it was designed to do and bringing a quality of life to someone who thought they’d never live without pain.

In addition, as a business owner, it’s not about fancy marketing, big waiting rooms, the latest gadget, or the perfect location. It’s about delivering quality chiropractic care through an efficient system that is built upon rock-solid business principles. In today’s environment, this is the only way to recession-proof your practice. I’ve witnessed this through several decades of experience utilizing the same formula of success for thousands of chiropractors across the United States.

Chiropractic can, and will, do well in these hard economic times because of the value it offers. However, in order for us to continue to spread the message about the value and effectiveness of chiropractic, we are not only going to have to unite as a profession, but we must also unite on sound business principles. Once embraced, then action needs to follow. This is not just my opinion. Overwhelming evidence from our profession’s history shows that when proper business principles are applied, predictable and favorable results will follow.
